'Insight': Sex Addiction - VIDEO previews

An addiction to sex.

Think Tiger Woods and Russell Brand, who both claim to suffer from it. There’s a multi-million dollar rehabilitation industry built around it.

But others claim there’s no such thing as “sex addition”. Unlike drug and alcohol addiction, it’s not included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

“This is a load of malarkey”, says clinical psychologist Dr David Ley. “It is pop psychology gone far astray because people are using it as a label to avoid responsibility”.

In this episode of the brilliant Australian SBS TV show 'Insight', meet people claiming to be sex addicts, their therapists, psychologists with conflicting views and loved ones who have been impacted by their partners’ behaviour.

Guests on the show include:

Ken Fergusson says he’s a recovering sex addict whose life unravelled due to his uncontrollable sexual behaviour. Ken says he has never been faithful in any of his relationships and says he used internet dating, pornography and cyber-sex to satisfy his constant need for sexual fixes. Ken is now in therapy and trying to save his relationship with partner Gillian.

“I was literally begging this woman to get her clothes off and get naked on the bed… I wanted a fix” – Ken

Watch his preview clip:

Gillian Robinson is Ken’s partner. She says she’s “been to hell and back” trying to have a committed and loving relationship with him. Gillian has demanded that Ken stop all virtual sex with other women, throw away the contact book and stop viewing pornography. However, she says the lies and the lack of intimacy have taken a huge toll on her. She’s in therapy too.

Dr David Ley is an American clinical psychologist and author of The Myth of Sex Addiction. He says sex addiction is just “pop psychology gone far astray”. Instead he believes cultural issues about sexuality and relationship problems are at the heart of why some people think their sexual behaviour is out of control.

Watch Dr Ley's preview clip:

Jesse Fink says he had sex with hundreds of women after his marriage breakdown. But he thinks sexual addiction is “a crock of shit”. “I think people who are caught out doing terrible things are now just throwing the term ‘sex addiction’ in the air,” he says.  Jesse says he chose to go on a sexual rampage and was not addicted to sex.  He’s written a book about his experiences.

Watch Jesse's preview clip:

A committed Christian, Luke Gibbons had a secret he was keeping from his church community: he was addicted to pornography. After struggling with his desires, he says he checked himself into “rehab” and was put on a 12-step recovery program. Luke says he first started watching porn in primary school and that by the time he was a teenager he was addicted. Luke has since been open about his struggles.

Here is a preview from the show:

"Australia hits a pash rash epidemic" - Gillette

I just love the press releases that come into my inbox: "New research shows women fear kissing men with stubble."

"Australia hits a pash rash epidemic," it continues. "New research released today reveals kissing in Australia is on the decline with women purposely avoiding men with stubble in fear of the dreaded ‘pash rash.’"

Um, HELL YES!

I haaate pash rash. Hated it since I started, you know, pashing, and still hate it now with my husband of 10 years.

What? Surprised we still pash after 13 years plus together? Why, of course! We still enjoy it. BUT: I am very particular about any kinda exfoliating that does not involve gentle microbeads and soap and has Dermalogica written all over it. No, I DO NOT like a pash rash caused by ample stubble. I am simply too old for that - and too vain. No red facial patches for me!

Below is the Gillette-produced video titled 'The Kiss Debate Australia - A Social Experiment', where relationship expert Nikki Goldstein (pictured below) aims to find out what is causing the decline of kissing in Australia.

Watch:

In the same Gillette study of over 1000 Australians aged 18-39, stubble was found to be an obstacle to passionate kissing. In fact, seven out of ten women surveyed admitted they prefer to give a man with stubble a quick kiss on the mouth, rather than a long lingering kiss. In contrast, 71% Australian women admitted they would happily share a long lingering kiss with a clean shaven guy. Are you listening George-Michael-five-day-growth-men?

The research has found that the threat of the dreaded pash rash among women is so rife there are actually avoidance tactics in place. Almost two thirds (61%) have knocked back a man with stubble bluntly explaining that stubble causes irritation to their skin. Other pash rash avoidance tactics include kissing a man with stubble on the cheek (39%). A third of women are even turning their head away (33%). (Anecdotally, I can add to this: a vast percentage also say: "Babe, that really hurts! Let's continue this when you're clean-shaven." So I have heard...)

All of this has led to some very-lucky-to-be-researching-fun-stuff experts to declare that Australia is on the brink of a kissing recession – and stubble is to blame.

The research, commissioned by Procter & Gamble’s Gillette, also shows that over 50% of those women surveyed admitted that stubble has caused them to avoid intimately kissing a man. And when they do dare to go there, 77% of women declare that stubble is horrible and scratchy to kiss.

“Kissing is such an intimate fundamental part of a relationship. It signifies intimacy between two people and is the starting point to building a meaningful connection and a longer-lasting intimacy,” says Nikki Goldstein. “Kissing also releases brain chemicals such as oxytocin, also known as the ‘love hormone’, which is responsible for making people feel bonded and connected. If kissing is on the decline as this research suggests, then we, as a nation, are in serious trouble!”

Some women do find stubble attractive, though. Words used by those women surveyed to describe a man with stubble included ‘rugged’ (56%), ‘masculine’ (52%) and ‘sexy’ (45%). Despite this, 80% of women say they still prefer to kiss a clean shaven man*.

When it comes to guys and shaving, just 44% of those men surveyed said that they shave one to three times a week. Despite the lack of kissing action in their lives, common excuses for men not shaving more often are they don’t feel they need to shave everyday (49%), they can’t be bothered (49%), they are time poor (23%). Interestingly, some men (20%) are most put off by shaving due to the experience of skin irritation. (Can we please do a survey on shaved heads? Because I haaate them. Can someone then deliver these results to my other half? Thanks).

To put this research to the test, Gillette interviewed kissing experts and doctors, conducted biometric research (wow!) on couples kissing and spoke to everyday women – and men – about their thoughts on stubble and kissing. Their insights are featured in a new doco “Are Aussie Men Killing the Kiss?”, which deves into the current state of the kiss in Australia, the significance of the kiss, and why it’s so important than couples get it right.

In addition, men and women alike are invited to participate in a debate about whether stubble is killing the kiss at www.thekissdebate.com.au or #thekissdebate.

Additional findings: only 54% of Australian women have told their partner that his stubble is attractive or sexy. However, 75% of Australian women in a relationship believe the irritation of kissing their partner with stubble actually outweighs the attractiveness of their partner with stubble. Clean shaven men are described by the opposite sex as well groomed (71%) and smooth (53%). One in three men (35%) revealed women have refused to kiss them intimately for fear of getting ‘pash rash’.

The survey was conducted nationally by Galaxy Research on behalf of Gillette in September 2013. The study was conducted online among a sample of 1000 men and women aged 18 and above.

*RSVP.com.au survey, commissioned by Gillette in August 2012, conducted online among a sample of 1,192 men and women aged 18 and above.

'Hardly Branson: Seven Days in Space with a Martini' - Nicole Lenoir-Jourdan Interview

Nicole Lenoir-Jourdan is an incredibly diverse writer. I have known Nicole for many years as a publicist extraordinaire. I had no idea she was also such a talented writer.

Nicole has written in a number of genres, and her latest work, 'Hardly Branson: Seven Days in Space with a Martini' is a comedic science fiction in the genre of Jasper Fforde, Terry Pratchett and her favourite writer, the late Douglas Adams, whom Nicole was privileged to interview.

In fact, Nicole's most prized possession is her copy of the Douglas Adams' 'Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' which bear the words: "To Nicole, whose questions were much more clever than my answers! With best wishes, Douglas Adams", after she interviewed him for Singapore's Peak Magazine, and Oyster Magazine, at the Intercontinental Hotel Sydney.

Here is the gorgeous and talented Nicole:

What was the catalyst for you to write this book?

Nicole: I have always loved science fiction comedy and having worked in the travel industry for around twenty years, I thought the timing perfect to do this story as there are so many inroads being made into Space Tourism.

Have you always been interested in this genre? Tell me why!

Nicole: Yes I loved Douglas Adams’ who wrote the five book trilogy of 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.' I even had the opportunity to interview him in Sydney and he signed my copy of his book with the words “To Nicole whose questions were more clever than my answers!” Something I will truly treasure, especially as he is no longer alive.

Give us a rundown on the plotline and central characters of the book?

Nicole: “A hilarious expose of the travel industry. Bridget Jones meets the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and organises his book launch. The flaws and foibles of a cast of dubious characters are mercilessly mocked. The perfect book to read on your next inter-galactic space shuttle.” So said Rebecca Weisser from 'The Australian.'

The Galaxy is open for business. Who else could have tapped into this market but Earthling, Dick Brampton? Dick Brampton is starting daily flights to Froog. He funded this venture the sale of the Earth to the President of the Galaxy who had no view from his bath tub. Bathing is of the utmost importance to Galactians, so are manufactured views.

The President’s right hand alien, his interior decorator, Rod, was on a mission to create the perfect view. The Earth had just the right colour scheme. Rod travelled to Earth and after seeing a publicity launch with Brampton as King of the World, met with him to negotiate the terms to secure this view.

Doug Dahl an unassuming surfer wanted to find his perfect soul mate. When Brampton launched his flights to the galaxy, Doug decided space was the place for singles. Unfortunately the launch flight was not particularly successful.

Doug landed in a bathtub of a ten foot large green pimply alien Zurm. From the Zurms bath to the planet Froog, Doug somehow voyages around the planet  in a variety of styles from depressing public transport, blue bubble taxis with hyper drives and hot pink trion brand spaceships. The search is on for his soul mate. He has no idea that it just happens to be one of the types he is pursued by.

Doug is also interwoven into a conspiracy for Dick Brampton to become president of the Galaxy. One of the most powerful groups in the galaxy, the black BMY driving real estate agents who are after Brampton as he cut the Earth deal before they did highjack the presidents view and demand payment. Brampton fakes his death in order to summon support for the great election.

Who would book most appeal to, and what do you hope for the book?

Nicole: The book is written for a young adult fiction but I hope that in the same way that 'Harry Potter' and 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' have universal appeal over all demographics, that this will have people in their 40s chuckling, as well as the teenagers.

Melissa Gorga Book: 'Bethenny' Interview - VIDEO

In the past 24 hours much has been said about the new book by Melissa Gorga.

Melissa is one of the 'Real Housewives of New Jersey', and has just penned a book called:

'Love Italian Style: The Secrets of My Hot and Happy Marriage.'

This article in particular slammed the couple's marriage, with the piece entiled: 'Real Housewife' Melissa Gorga's New Book Advocates Marital Rape.

The article deconstructs various paragraphs in Melissa's book, like this one:
Men, I know you think your woman isn't the type who wants to be taken. But trust me, she is. Every girl wants to get her hair pulled once in a while. If your wife says "no," turn her around, and rip her clothes off. She wants to be dominated.
Women don't realize how easy men are. Just give us what we want.
That is rape and it is insane that it got past the publisher. (says the Jezebel article).
Melissa and Joe just appeared on the new 'Bethenny' show and also dropped a few controversial clangers.

When Bethenny asked Joe if Melissa ever turns him down for sex, Joe replied: "She fights it. She fights it, but I always win," he said.

He then continued to describe a time when Melissa came home tired, but he told her "Daddy needs his sleeping pill."

Watch that clip here.

And this:

Today, Melissa responded to critics by saying: "I'm so disgusted that a reporter has taken things completely out of context simply for shock value. #SAD."

What do you think of this all?

"300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring." - Stephanie Smith's experiment.

Can you hear that?

It's the sound of people all over the world, utterly aghast.

Not really.

This woman kicked off an experiment, which can be described as fun, delicious... and a tad 'Stepford Wife' perhaps?

The woman - Stephanie Smith - is 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring.

Here is Stephanie and her boyfriend Eric:

Here is an excerpt from the story:

Since last June, a young woman has attracted attention from culinary world icons such as Emeril Lagasse, Michael White and Ken Friedman with 300sandwiches.com, a beautifully photographed blog that documents her quest to woo her boyfriend with bread-and-meat creations. We now reveal that the woman behind the blog is our very own Page Six senior reporter, STEPHANIE SMITH. Here, she tells her story — and shares some recipes.
My boyfriend, Eric, is the gourmet cook in our relationship, but he’d always want me to make him a sandwich.
Each morning, he would ask, “Honey, how long you have been awake?”
“About 15 minutes,” I’d reply.
“You’ve been up for 15 minutes and you haven’t made me a sandwich?”
To him, sandwiches are like kisses or hugs. Or sex. “Sandwiches are love,” he says. “Especially when you make them. You can’t get a sandwich with love from the deli.”
One lazy summer afternoon just over a year ago, I finally gave in. I assembled turkey and Swiss on toasted wheat bread. I spread Dijon mustard generously on both bread slices, and I made sure the lettuce was perfectly in line with the neatly stacked turkey slices.
Eric devoured the sandwich as if it were a five-star meal, diving in with large, eager bites. “Babes, this is delicious!” he exclaimed.
As he finished that last bite, he made an unexpected declaration of how much he loved me and that sandwich: “Honey, you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!”

Yup. I know. Scandalous!

Look. Nobody should bribe anyone with anything for an engagement ring, ever.

This sounds like something that started exactly as described above, in jest. Her editor said "Write a story!" and it snowballed from there. He's probs going to propose anyway, and they've talked about it, and she knows it. And this is a fun way to get there, and they're having a chuckle along the way. Meanwhile, it's all "Oh my GAWD, dump him girl!" and, "God, what a pig", etc, etc.

Me: I LOVE cooking for my husband. Love seeing him hoe into a fresh batch of pasta which I know is so good when he eats it straight from the pot, and mops up the tomato sauce with bread. This gives me great pleasure. We are a bit traditional: I do all the cooking, but yeah, he helps a LOT with the cleaning. Not "helps", actually. Does it because he loves it. Yeah, I know. Weird.

Does it annoy me sometimes when I have to cook and don't feel like it? Hell yes.

What do you think of the above? Comment below!

'Perfect North' by Jenny Bond: Interview

When I was sent this book - 'Perfect North' by Jenny Bond - I was a little floored.

Two things. Jenny has secured a two-book contract with Hachette Australia (the Aussie arm of a huge global publisher). For a new author, this is virtually unheard of.

And second, she has been referred to as a 'modern-day Jane Austen.'

How much more excited could I get, gosh darn it!

Here is Jenny Bond:

A little tip to those reading the book: don't start reading this beauty before bedtime. It's engaging, and delicious, and so beautifully written and well researched, you're drawn in immediately and kinda don't want to let go.

The story is inspired by true events, and while ever deep love and deceit are involved, it's as compelling as you expect it to be.

The gist, and how it came to be? Best answered by the author herself.

Here, Jenny Bond answers some questions just for Josie's Juice:

Tell me about the catalyst for writing the book?

Jenny: Seventeen years ago on the day of our marriage my husband toasted his new wife with a heartfelt speech. The only part of the speech I remember is the part saluting me as his inspiration to write a novel.

Over the years, Chris has written the first two chapters of many novels. But the demands of paying the mortgage, raising a family and walking a dog have meant all the beginnings have remained without middles and endings. I have often reminded him of his words at our wedding, hoping he would be driven to action.

In 2010 I broached the subject again. Believing that my suggestion was conveyed in the most friendly and supportive of tones, I was shocked when he turned to me and said, quite crankily, “Why don’t you write a book?”

“Well, I will then,” I snapped in reply.

That was the catalyst for Perfect North.

What was the inspiration for writing the book?

Jenny: Around the same time that Chris threw down the gauntlet I came across the fascinating and tragic story of a Swedish balloon expedition to the North Pole in the late 1800s in The New Yorker magazine. It was the lunacy of the plan that gripped me the most and I thought it would be an excellent starting point for a novel. It became a story of adventure, love, loss and the people the adventurers left behind.

How do you feel now that it’s out (just released today):

Jenny: I’m thrilled that Perfect North is finally in book stores but that feeling has grown very slowly over the past few weeks. It seems so long ago that I began on the massive undertaking of writing Perfect North. Since then I have completed my second novel and begun my third so Perfect North hasn’t been on my radar for a while. But the excitement I have felt from my publisher, friends and family has rubbed off on me. Likewise, discussing the novel and the characters again with journalists has rekindled my absolute delight in the tale.

Who would you like to have read the book?

Jenny: I’d love to have Steven Spielberg read Perfect North. It seems like a story that would be right up his alley – adventure/romance/mystery. It would make a fantastic summer blockbuster! We can always hope, yes?

YES! What do you hope the reader gets from reading the book?

Jenny: I hope, first and foremost, that readers will simply enjoy reading Perfect North. I hope the characters resonate with them long after they’ve finished reading as they still resonate with me.
