Video Montageeeeeeee

Whelp, I was looking through my camera and found a lot of shaky footage of family and friends from my trip back to the States and thought I'd share a smile with you. Obviously I didn't have my camera handy every time someone said something funny or a moment was made, but I nevertheless think this is a decent record of what went on and where.
After experimentally posting it directly in blogger because youtube (no capital for you!) decided that the third party content I used as a soundscape counts as property infringement, I've opened an account with vimeo and there hasn't been trouble yet.
When you consider that less than 100 people are likely to see this video and that some of them may be moved to buy the music, it becomes obvious why both youtube and that record label need to slow their roll. But since they want to set their ringtone to scorched earth, I will gladly light my blow torch.
And so, in the spirt of "sticking it where you still can,"  I've provided a link to download that song and many others for free:

01 - Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built
02 - Twin Shadow - Five Seconds
03 - Screaming Females - Rotten Apple
04 - FIDLAR - Cheap Beer

Queen of the eyesores

Annnnnnnnd we're back from blogging hiatus. I would apologize for my absence, but that's bad for morale, so instead I'll solemnly swear I've been up to no good.

The last three weeks have found me on the State side of the moon forgetting everything I knew about French and remembering little American tricks like eggnog and cheddar cheese.
We spent the first few days of our trip with Sebastien's parents in Columbus, Ohio--I tried the strangest ice creams there: Banana and bacon, rosemary, olive oil and chocolate chip, raspberry and goat cheese and marshmallow and yams. We also met up with a friend from university and caught up on the who-and-the-what.

Next stop was Saint Louis to rendezvous with all of the Torrini Clan--ie Sebastien's extended family on his mother's side. It's cool because a lot of his cousins are right around our age and they've asking interesting questions, dating cool people and have maintained good taste in music.

From the Lou we caught a flight to Boston and met up with another college friend- whom my best friend from High school coincidentally learned about on Goodreads. If you like Zombie books, you should check her out too.
After that I spent more time than I should have at Chez ma mere. My mother for her part doesn't really like me, stoutly refuses to offer me validation but is at least willing to miss me sincerely whenever I leave--so that's something, I suppose.
Seb and I rang in the New Year with my younger sister and my best friends along the shore of Oyster Pond watching the fireworks from water's edge. While it certainly lacked the splendor of the 14th of July in Paris, we were most definitely entertained.
It's always fun being on the Cape, looking over my old bookshelfs and boxes now relegated to the cellar. I can see me and remember what was feeling that first read through whenever I touch the spine of an old book. Just on a lark I reread the Great Gatsby and decided by page six that this text is utterly wasted on High school Students:
"Her husband, among various physical accomplishments, had been one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven-a national figure in a way, one of those men who reach such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterward savors of anti-climax."

If your not impressed, you will be if only you reread the book for yourself. And why not? It will fit so cleverly into your pocket.
Atanyrate, I shared this notion of wastefulness and teenagers with my former English teacher, whom I had the good fortune to encounter at my younger brother's basketball game and was pleased to find that she whole heartedly agreed. It very much made me feel like I was in a secret club...
Having wrapped things up on Cape Cod about as well as could be hoped, Sebastien and I have been back in Boston for a day or two trying to squeeze in all the last minute visits and shopping trips we can. They don't, for instance, sell dryer sheets in France...dafuq?
On to cultural notes:
Sweatpants...they're a thing in Boston.
You can honestly pay a lot of money for a pair of sweats in the US. This would never, ever, I repeat ever happen in Europe.
Heading to the corner store for some milk?
Get on some real pants.
Seriously Boston, Jake gets it--why don't you?
I'm not trying to be uppity or put on airs--it's the T not the metro. I may speak a second language but haven't forgotten my roots. It's just that  uggs and a juicy suit have never been my thing. And I would never date a guy in ecco complex anything. I'm not a judgy face--I don't even like Downton Abbey.

Other cultural notes:
American Pickles are better.  But if tiny and warty is your thing, I'm not going to stop you.
Trader Joes is an asset to cultural diffusion. Did you know that you can buy raclette cheese there now?And the samples lady called  Crayfish langoustine.... Ok playa, time to pump those breaks. Cos that shit cray.
American beers are way better than French ones. Belgium you're still cool. Seriously though, Europe--Stop scoffing and start checking out these breweries: Magic Hat, Flying dog, Red Hook,  Blue Moon. Honestly, these are just my steady eddies, a bunch of new regional beers have sprung up that I haven't even had the time to try. Much like how the States can't be summarized by San Francisco and New York City--American beer isn't just Budweiser. But sometimes it is, because I get nostalgic for running from the cops and drinking in the woods. Plus bud light is 7 dollars a pitcher--and that's after happy hour.

I feel like I'm leaving a lot of stuff out and that this is also getting kind of long so for further clues as to how I spent my time you can head over to my new instagram feed.  Add me if you like me.

In closing, I just want to make clear that I'm so glad I we made this trip. I saw a lot of the people I love--not all, but a lot of them. Sebastien and I came up against constraints and annoyances  and still managed to make the best of it. If you haven't heard me say it in awhile, he's so much better than I deserve.
We head back to France tomorrow.
It's weird to know that I still feel more relaxed in States that I've never lived in than a country that I've called home for two years. And yet, I'm going back expecting to feel relieved when French is the background noise I hear between songs....Attention à la marche en descendant du train..
I will.
I always do.
Even when it's just the T and there ain't no gap to speak of.

New England's Daughter

In French, the word for the sea sounds the same as the word for mother. To me that's just one of those coincidences that shouldn't need explaining.

Today in class, like small children all over France, my classmates and I talked about the seasons. Our teacher had us close our eyes and listen to sound clips--they were wonderfully evocative.
A person walking through the leaves, through the snow, bird song, children at a pool; I was all a flutter with nostalgia and love.
We talked about our senses--the related verbs and nouns. We played with the smart board, touching and making links.
We listened to a director give an interview about her favorite season.
She described blue skys that snap like  young green shoots. You've been there too. It feels rude to try and debase it with language. That deep cold breath you take when all the fall leaves are all the right shades, so close to falling. So alive, so very awake.
Our teacher asked us to close our eyes again and think about the place we were born.
I stuttered momentarily because I am a child of two States. But I am wholly the daughter of New England.

Cape Cod, you are my warm memories.
Walks at night. Such darkness, such privilege.
Coyotes and foxes: my friends and betters. Constellations so faithful in their arrangements even charlatans knew they deserve epic tales.
Shooting stars.
                 Every night.
Any night you want. After the fireflies, but before the june bugs.

The beach. Boogie boards.
Playing pickle, sliding in the sand, trying not to get pegged.
Waves: The science. The music. The salt.
Feeling waterlogged when I take a deep breath. Remembering my mom calling it that.
The way she'd always take us to a pond around sunset, "To wash up."
My fingers pruned, so much more completely than bath time.
Sand in my sandwich, sand in my suit. Sand in the car, in my sneakers, in my bed.

Dune surfing with Zack. Sunscreen on my back.
Taking the boat down the channel, aways away from all the tourists.
Digging holes  with my feet. Letting the water evaporate on my skin.
Body surfing.
Fighting the current and failing.
Sand sharks in the surf. Seaweed in my hair.
Blue, blue, blue is the sky. A crackling blue.
No clouds. No wind, except sometimes both.
The ocean right before a hurricane, fearsome turbid and shards of stain-glass.
The shore birds. The seals.
The horseshoe crabs, ugly, ancient and immobile--being dressed up by children.

My hair when it's bleach by the sun, hard crusty and tasting of salt.
The freckles I can't escape.
The final shake out my towel.

Putting my foot through the last sand castle standing,
Bidding the tide take the rest.

Southern Vermont, you are my cold memories.
Checking the sugaring lines--that first time you go out collecting.

Stars as you've never seen them. Clear cold, dead or dying. Corn fields in the moonlight. Pumpkins and gords in every shade of sunshine.
The smell of the cows, of the sheep, of the hens.
How feral now, cat--on my lap?
              Here, you purr.
A flat palm with an apple, a gratified horse.
A old Holstein named Tony.
Too heavy for one hand, the hay.
The last harvest.
Sugar on snow.
Two, three four steps from the door--shin deep and not even a drift.
Icicles like cave formations, dangerous and thrilling.
All children with snow suits slide like penguins in the end.
Lay on your belly and lick the ice.
Down hills in twos on plastic, brace your feet for that fence--painted white and white again, last summer--such a long way from now.
Gloves when they work, mittens when they don't.
The clouds parting to illuminate a clearing high along the other side of the valley. Making you think of old paintings, and of god.
Mud season. When the river runs thick again. The first melt.
The first growth, soft and promising--all the way back to the first frost--
Crystals on the pumpkins, their blossoms becoming earth.

Letting your cup of syrup cool in the snowbank before you drink it down, gulp after gulp.

Heading home wet, smelling like smoke.

Mixing tapes like it's 1999.

Have you ever wanted a gift that was almost as much for me as it is for you? Well, then you're clearly on the market for a mixtape.
Below is a picture of the peninsula I'm from, and Rt 28 is the major autoroute that runs through her. It becomes 128 once you hit Boston. And as I lived in down on the Cape and up in Boston for a few years each, I thought I'd make a mix to remind the rest of the world that the ladys of Cambridge know who I am...

Like the cover? Download Rt 28 and each track will display it!

Duncan (Colbert intro)..............................................Paul Simon
Even though I harvested the sample myself--want for quality though it does, I still credit my buddy Mike who put this song on the final mix he made me when I graduated university. And for the record, my father was a fishermen....and I may just have been born from the bordom and the chowder.
Roadrunner..............................................................Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers
This song was on the opening credits to one of my favorite public access shows, Naked with Bacon. When I moved out to LA a few years after, this was the first song I heard playing inside Amoeba Music, (the only music store fit to rival Newbury Comics back east.) The moment felt cosmically appropriate.
Walcott....................................................................Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend is not from neither Cape Cod nor Boston, but this is forgivable because they're basically the only modern band to even notice us.
Getting noticed is surreal.
Check out Fab Ciraolo -- his art gives my optic nerve a lady boner.

Mass Pike (R.Frost/Outsiders intro).........................The Get Up Kids
This Outsiders quote was originally attached to a version of a New Found Glory Song that was forever on my high school mixtapes. I don't know if they couldn't get the rights to the sample or something but I can't find that version anywhere, and it's totally in a box of other mix cds~ Anyway, this mashup is an homage to the fact that those two bands would have totally been on the same tape. Plus, Robert Frost was from New England, nbd.
The Ocean..............................................................Dar Williams
"Let me tell you the song of this town, she said everything closes at 5. After that, well you've just got the bars." I knew a transman from Maine who could relate to the small town seaside feel of this song,so, Cape Cod can't claim it alone. But Dar was a gift from my best friends Lean Milly-a & Ryehanson, aka Rhitard, aka Rye-ann-nom Al-shaminger...this will all be relevant when you get to the song I wrote for her a few tracks down...almost.
Down Easter Alexa................................................Billy Joel
Billy Joel was huge when I was still just a sprat. And like any cool kid, I got all my first CDs from my mom. No, my friends, I didn't start the fire--but it's still just rock and roll to me. Anyway, BJ is a wash-ashore who transposes the keyboard while he's vacationing on Nantucket. For the uninitiated, those are three solid reasons to disapprove of him completely. And frankly forget the swordfish, there ain't no luck in Cod Fishin' here.
Brandy (Toll Booth Willy Intro)..........................Looking Glass
Rumor has it I might just get my whimsy from my mother's side of the tum-tum tree. Anyway, one time when she was dropping me off back at school, this song came on and she told me that apparently, my father had said this song reminded him of her. I've always it a fancied it a romantic scope under which to view the recombinants of my DNA. Naturally I had to spoil the moment by adding samples from the best dirty CD mc ever.
Homecoming King.................................................Guster
I used to be up Guster's shorts and I even met them once before a concert and found out one of them used to life-guard at the pool on Winter-hill. That was cool, but this was really the last album of his I could get into. I check in with them now and then and still find that through the way they chose to play their instruments and due largely to how effortlessly they blow goats, I am just no longer interested in
hearing them meow. But they say Massachusetts a gang of times on this track.
One 11 Princeton Street.........................................The Stares the Loots and the Lyres
This song is for my best friend, Rhi. When my band mate came to me with the piano part I knew I wanted to write a track for her. If it sounds a bit like the Ben Fold Five cut that ends the album that's pure coincidence...we were trying to make it sound like Penny Lane.
Boston (Mr. Lif Mix)..............................................Vampire Weekend
I think this is both my best track as well as the one I'm least satisfied with. Not many rappers with a name have made it out of Boston so I had to put Mr. Lif on here. Howevski, one hip hop number woulda stood out most grotesquely. But these samples were recorded live at the Middle East and that's all Scyentifik, for putting me on to Lif.
I Hate The Unseen.................................................Dark Buster
Dark Buster should have made it out of Boston. They were my favorite punk band of that era. Even though they shared the Knights of Columbus stage with many amazing Bean-town acts such as: Zippo Raid, Toxic, What and the Unseen. You might have actually heard of the Unseen if you're into punk.
Jonathan.................................................................Nerf Herder
This is amusing pick because it's about the singer of the second track on this mix. Plus those scruffy Nerf Hearderz mob his guitar style and taught me everything I ever bothered to learn about Jonathan
Richman. Nerf Herder also wrote the first song I could sing and play at the same time.
Don't Change Your Plans (Will Hunting)...........Ben Folds 5
Ben Folds Five carries a lot of currency in my adolescent and his lyrics and my memories are stamped all over those dolla dolla bills y'all. But I did change my plans once and I did move to LA and even if the leaves are still falling back east the road goes ever on, for Will Hunting as well. I tried to put Mystic Pizza on this track, but the quote I decided on reminds me of every genius I ever grew up around. Just think of a whole town worth of talent living on unemployment half the year.

I love Cape Cod and I love Boston and I will always have the salt of the first 13 in my viens. But I wasn't captain of the New England Drinking team for nothing: I'm a Masshole first, in a ll things. I'll always scoff at Canadians, New Yorkers, Yankees fans, and anyone in the entire world wearing a hat with an NY on it. Especially if they don't like (or even understad the rules of) baseball. I will warmly extend this disdain to all persons from Rhode Island whose major contribution was Ocean State Job Lot, Maine, a land mass not even worth defending from the British, New Hampshire, who seriously wishes they were Vermont, and Vermont who needs to remember that those are barely mountains. Of couse I would never leave out anyone who pretends Connecticut isn't a suburb of, or perhaps mealy a parking-lot  for New York.

Yep. That last paragraph is the kind that helps you make friends and ensured my tenure as the captain of the New England drinking team--where my principal job was to set the minium standard for alcohol poisoning and survival. Those sick fucks wanted me dead...can't imagine why.
And if it doesn't make you want to download this mix:

David a dit ca

Who would have thought I would be getting a chance to meet my favorite living writer? I was still working that silly temp gig in DC when I learned that David Sedaris would be in  an anglophone books store here in Paris this evening.
I knew he would be promoting and reading from his new book, but I had read that in early November, and it hasn't stayed alive in me the way some of his other books did. For those of you whom have yet to read Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, all the protagonists are animals.  It is amusing to see the categories of behaviors we all associate with animal grafted effectively on to portrayals of real people you might encounter at your local super market--anthropomorphizing at it's funniest. But it's also quite depressing as he touches on some of the worst tendencies in the human existence-- betrayal, deceit, despair, rationalization--sometimes all at once!
Nevertheless, hoping against hope that he would not just read from his new book, we weary Anglophones packed in to the Village Voice like so many sardines. I really wanted to hear something from  Me Talk Pretty One Day or Holidays on Ice--both feeling topical given the season and city. Sadly, I wasn't in the same room with him for his reading, instead I watched him live on a closed circuit TV right by the signing table. He read the title story and recounted the book naming process he outlined for me on the The Jimmy Kimmel Show and then again on the Daily Show making the experience more like a movie when I've read too many reviews and seen too many trailers. Thankfully, he read next from his personal journal and I have posted a short wobbly video of those below.

And then I got to meet him. He kind of treated me like I was at the dentist office, or as though he were Santa Clause. His tone wasn't condescending but accommodating in a familiar professional way slick with many shinings. It was only off putting in the least because it made clear that there was a He and then the rest of us.  I asked him to sign a copy of Naked and an insert from the New Yorker to hang on my wall. I think I'll frame it.
During the brief question and answer period that followed his reading David asked if we would tell him jokes and although I thought of many better ones after on the RER out of Paris, I could only come up with dead baby jokes at the time. He said that when he tried to tell a joke to someone and they stop him and say they've already heard it, that he feels punched or slapped. But being on a 58 city tour and having heard jokes at every reading we shouldn't feel accosted if he's heard ours.  The dead baby joke format is simple and crude. He said he'd heard most of them and even if he hadn't, once you know the equation they're easy to decipher.
ME: What's the difference between a pile of dead babies and a Camaro?
DS: I don't have a Camaro..
ME: In my garage!
DS: I've modified that joke.
ME: How?
DS: What's the difference between a Camaro and an erection?
ME:What?
DS: I don't have a Camaro.
He said it in this wonderfully creepy voice too.
"I couldn't be happier that you said that," I responded honestly as I deposited my new treasures in my bag. David asked me where I was from. I mentioned Cape Cod and of course he was familiar. I asked him in French if he had vacationed there. He said he had not, but that he had visited it for one day when his sister Gretchen was graduating.
It was weird for me to hear the name of someone I had read about from the person who wrote it. When he said her name a little part of me jumped up and said, oh--I know her! But I don't actually, just as I didn't actually meet David. But I did pay 14 euros for a book I once owned to have signed by his stage persona, a fair deal--as I could easily pay more than that to spend time with a person and only get sex. I by contrast got to meet my favorite author David Sedaris, practically a national treasure and he had just told me that he had an erection. I don't mean to create a false dichotomy, but I'm fairly certain he doesn't have a Camaro.
