'American Hustle': REVIEW and clip

At the tail end of 2013, 'American Hustle' must be deemed one of the most excitng, engaging movies of the year. And it'll start to garner a swag of award noms. The SAGS and Golden Globes have already given it several nods.

The movie's sheer star power is enough to draw you in... the script, impeccable acting, and flawless direction (by David O. Russell, who directed 'Silver Linings Playbook') is enough to keep you there.

The unexpectedly genuinely funny moments - many delivered beautifully by Jennifer Lawrence - are so good, so clever. About halfway through, I was thinking: where's Jennifer? I thought she had more screen time/presence. Don't worry... she makes up for it in the second half. Here she is in one of the movie posters:



And there's good reason there's so much buzz surrounding JLaw... she's exceptional, and a real firecracker on screen as she is off.

Some of the lines she gets to deliver - and own - are fantastic. Like this one, to Amy Adams (positively magnetic on screen, in every frame), who plays the mistress to JLaw's onscreen husband, played brilliantly by a beefed up Christian Bale:

"Sometimes all you have in life are fucked up, poisonous choices." She says to Adams's character, before planting a passionate kiss. In a public toilet. After blasting her for sleeping with her husband.Of course.

On her volatile relationship with Bale's character, she yells at him: "We fight and we fuck, that's what we do, that's our thing!"

Another stellar moment - the introduction of this new product called a 'microwave'... What she does to this 'scientific' machine is rather hilarious.

From a fashion perspective, the 1970s crochet cut-out one piece swimming costume was created... by an Aussie! Fashion designer Lisa Maree Boersma, from Bondi, was the brains behind this 1970s replica swimsuit. Here it is:

Another notable mention: Bradley Cooper's permed hairdo. In some scenes, it features with those tiny perm hair curlers firmly in place. Zexy.

But seriously, Bradley flexes his some serious acting muscle, as does Jeremy Renner and Robert De Niro. If Bradley doesn't get an awards nom, I'll eat my hat.

Here is the trailer for the movie, which is a story about a con artist (Bale) and his partner in crime (Adams) who were forced to work with a federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other cons, mobsters, and politicians - especially a mayor of the New Jersey precinct (Renner):

Tina Arena: 'Now I Can Dance' - Book Review

The memoir from one of Australia's most loved singers of all time has just been released: Tina Arena's book titled 'Now I Can Dance'. It reveals plenty about the much-loved singer, songwriter and global superstar.

The book beautifully captures the journey of the Aussie singing stalwart's extensive career, starting with her intro to the Australian TV viewer when she was an eight year old star of 'Young Talent Time' - so you can imagine the stories Tina has to tell. It's so beautifully written and easy to read, it's like Tina herself is sharing those stories with you over coffee.

She has sold eight million albums (and released her renowned songs 'Chains', 'Sorrento Moon' and 'Symphony of Life'), won a swag of awards, and experienced incredible professional and personal highs and lows.

Says Tina: “I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t write and sing. It makes me who I am, regardless of where I happen to be or what language I’m speaking. It has done since I wrote my first song and sang it to myself in the shower. It’s as natural for me as breathing. Filippina Arena sings to live and lives to sing...”

Almost four decades in music and Tina has been on one hell of a ride... and you kinda get the sense she's experiencing her best year yet right now.

Sharing her life in a book for the very first time the book is an uplifting read all about her loves, her family, her determination and her passion: music. Any good bio simply must have fantastic photos to go with it, to anchor it all - Tina's does. Oh how I adore looking at all her old - and new - pics. Again, feels like you're right there. Highly recommended for old fans and new. Go buy it.

1888 Hotel Pyrmont, Sydney: REVIEW

Staying at Sydney's new 1888 Hotel - which only opened a few months ago, but is already forging a reputation for being an exceptional home away from home - exceeded every expectation I had about the newly refurbished boutique hotel. I knew it was going to be fabulous (I'd stayed at 'sister hotel' in Melbourne), but this was kinda off-the-radar-amazing in every way.

Part of the impressive 8Hotels portfolio (which includes hotels, apartments, and villas around the world, including Paris) the 1888 Hotel is an arhictect and interior designer's fantastical dream. Stylish and well thought-through finishing touches adorn every corner. More on that to see below.

Before you even enter the property, you are met with the grandness of a heritage facade. Here it is:

The story behind this (I am all about the story, the history, the heritage) is that it was, of course, built in 1888. In its previous incarnations, it was a woolstore, it was used for commercial office space, and it was a carpark station - before it became the hotel it is today. After 12 months of gutting and renovating, it opened in June 2013.

The second you enter the hotel you know you're not staying at a place that needs to adhere to uniform constraints as part of a hotel chain. No, there is nothing cookie-cutter about this place: it's filled-to-the-brim with personality and its own unique character. I mean, there is a Nick Cave portrait on the floor of my room! You just know this place is going to be fabulous:

And yet, it's utterly serious-slash-stylish and streamlined enough to stay here for work those work conferences and short business stays (if you're in charge of booking the hotel for the event, expect to be high-fived on your choice). Even the meeting room for smaller conferences is ultra-cool):

The big and little things made the 1888 Hotel a memorable stay: an iPad in every room, only Australian products stocked in the mini-bar (many are organic and up and coming, quality brands), the bath loofah and quality bath products waiting for you in the massive, old-school-style bathtub, stylish retro bespoke armchairs adding a pop of colour to every room, exposed, iron bark original beams and brick walls, three metre high ceilings, huge soundproof period windows, artwork by Australian artists, complimentary WiFi, Smart TVs with media hubs, custom-made bedding with luxury MicroCloud bed toppers and bathrooms with walk-in rain showers - it's all here.

More about the hotel: 1888 Hotel is a heritage-listed 90 bedroom boutique hotel, eatery, bar and event space, located in Sydney's inner-city suburb of Pyrmont. 1888 neighbours the Sydney Fish Market, the Sydney Exhibition & Convention Centre, Darling Harbour, The Star, bars, a gazillion dining options, and shopping is a short stroll away. In fact, 1888 is just a few minutes’ walk from Darling Harbour, Cockle Bay, Sydney's CBD and Ultimo.

On the evening of my stay there, my companion and I enjoyed a drink at the hotel bar, before heading out to a dinner at The Century at the newly refurbished The Star (Sydney's casino). A post-dinner drink at Darling Harbour was just the ticket pre-bedtime on those dreamy beds.

What I also love about the location is that you are in the Sydney CBD, but on-the-outskirts-enough that you're not in the thick of the city madness. Also, there is a carpark across the road from the hotel - very convenient to come and go as you need.

And the staff: they seem to all be hand-picked to be exceptional, friendly people. Every single one of them seems to want to work there. In getting to know the hotel, I had loads of conversations with staff - and all are happy and proud to work there, and it shows. I would even go as far as saying the staff at 1888 Hotel is one of its greatest assets.

The foyer area is beautiful. I mean, look at it:

You might find you will spend lots of time there, lingering over breakfast (best buffet breakie... ever. So much variety the high quality... and or drinks in the adjoining eatery area. (If you Instagram all your foodie and drinkie pics, expect them to show up on the hotel MACs in the foyer area immediately - very cool).

The eatery precinct is fantastic, the ambience is cool, and it's a fab place to not only have breakast, but also enjoy cocktails the night before. The food is exceptional (see some of my Instagram photos here and here), the service is consistently excellent, the vibe relaxed and chilled and everything a holiday getaway or mini-break should be. Overall, I simply cannot fault 1888 Hotel - it is flawless, friendly, and a fabulous spot for any kind of stay in Sydney. I'd gladly stay here again. And I have been raving about it to anyone who will listen. It's perfection.

Pensione Hotel Melbourne: Review

I needed to get reaquainted with Melbourne. Fall in love with it again.

A few days away with my significant other (we hadn't been away for eons... ever, actually, post-kids). And so, I needed a retreat to base ourselves while we enjoyed the mini trip of a lifetime: to see our beloved Liverpool Football Club and explore the beauty of Melbourne. The home away from home had to be central, within walking distance to everything, immersed smack-bang in the middle of that famous Melbourne vibe, so we could drink in as much of it as possible

The Pensione Hotel Melbourne... it fit the bill in every single way.

This fabulous boutique hotel has 114 rooms. The rooftop sundeck - a beautiful haven in the midst of a surprisingly quiet 'concrete jungle' - is licensed: think chilled sangria and Corona beer buckets delivered up there for you and your buddies during service hours.

The goregous building façade is heritage-listed and dates back to 1905 – and the original building dates back to 1866.

The 8Hotels group took over the establishment in 2008 when it was a three-storey restaurant, and have been successfully running it since. The Pensione Melbourne's GM Calisha tells me it's hugely popular with tourists of all types, and especially those travelling to the precinct to attend conventions at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre nearby, just up the road alongside the Yarra River in the suburb of South Wharf.

I was given a tour of the rooms by Calisha and I was so very impressed. There is an apartment-style room for those who want long-term stays and the added extra of a kitchenette, and each room is lovingly appointed, with the cosy and modern feel you expect from a boutique hotel.

What I love about the establishment is that it captures the essence of that old world grandeur; it has a warmth and charm about it which is immediately welcoming the moment you set foot in there.

It's a very short walk from Southern Cross Station, the free City Circle Tram which runs every 10 minutes (this tram can get quite crowded, but you can hop on the usual, paid trams almost outside your doorstep, too), the huge and opulent Crown Casino (only a five minute stroll from the hotel), The Convention Centre, Etihad Stadium, and popular bars, cafes, restaurants, boutique shopping, and one of my shopping highlights: the Spencer Outlet Centre. The hotel has 24 hour reception, WiFi internet, car parking (on request), and laundry facilities.

The Pensione Melbourne Hotel displays the fresh signature style prominent within the Pensione brand and 8Hotels: fantastically good and courteous service, boutique interiors and convenient location. It ticks all the boxes.

We stayed in the courtyard suite, the only room of its kind in the hotel. It's cosy and inviting, and features your very own courtyard, which is kind of a sanctuary when you're in the heart of the bustling CBD.

This suite is a perfect treat for a romantic getaway, and features an ensuite, double bed with luxurious MicroCloud mattress topper, tea and coffee making facilities, plasma TV with Foxtel, and that fabulous and completely private courtyard to relax after walking around the city, and enjoy your own private drinks session or meal under the stars.

The next morning, we enjoyed a typically-Melbourne cosmopolitan breakfast at the adjoining Pensione Café (you can even pop in there for brekkie or coffee if you're passing by).

'Safe Haven' - DVD Giveaway and Review

'World War Z' Sydney Premiere, Red Carpet Photos + Review

The red carpet Australian premiere of the new Brad Pitt movie 'World War Z' (Brad stars in it, and he was producer on the film, via his production company Plan B) was the reason Brad Pitt finally jetted into Australia - for the very first time. Josie's Juice was one of the few sites who attended the special red carpet event.

Director Marc Forster (who also directed 'Quantum of Solace', 'Finding Neverland', and 'Monster's Ball) also came along for the trip, one of many the duo has fronted (this time, sadly, without Brad's partner in love and life Angelina Jolie) across the globe in the past week or so.

The 49 year old Hollywood actor has undertaken a somewhat frenzied press tour for the upcoming zombie thriller, jumping from London to Paris to Berlin to Atlanta (Georgia) in the space of seven days. And then, he followed that with same-day, whirlwind trips in the US to Philadelphia, Chicago and Austin, Texas.

And tonight, it was Sydney's turn.

Brad Pitt was the perfect movie star from the outset. The triple-A-list star arrived at the Sydney red carpet - held at The Star - on time.

The eager fans were the ones he greeted first. He headed straight over there and took the time to pose for photos and selfies; sign autographs; have a chat, and do the whole meet and greet with much enthusiasm. The fans were in turn enamoured.

As were we. And by 'we' I mean all the assembled TV media, and the select (only six) bloggers who were asked to come along to interview him. The roped off bloggers' spot was a rather privileged one and we knew it.

As Brad fronted us, a few of us got the chance to ask him a question. We'd talked amongst ourselves about what we'd ask when he came along. All the questions the others proposed were about the film. And that's what we were there for.

I really wanted to ask what we all really wanted to know... how is the family? What does he miss about them most when he's away?

Brad greeted me warmly, I introduced myself, and he listened intently as I asked "What do you miss most about your family when you're away?"

I wasn't loud enough and he leaned in closer and touched my arm reassuringly as I asked the question again. This was a man who did not take his 'celebrity' for granted. He connected with those who were there for him, and it showed.

Brad answered my question with a laugh, and seemed delighted my question was not about the film.

"Oh, I miss everything about them," he said with a wide smile. "I miss the noise!"

"Well, you have a large, wonderful family, and it'd always be noisy. I have twins," I offer up, "And I love all that. I can relate."

"Oh yes, I love it too!" says Brad. "And it's always so wonderful to come back home."

The joy his family brings to him is written all over his beautifully-lined face. There's a twinkle in his eye as he speaks about them, and I suddenly find the man incredibly endearing.

Director Marc Forster was also incredibly generous with his time on the red carpet.

And so, the movie.

Based on the novel by Max Brooks called 'World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War', the movie adaptation stars Brad Pitt as a UN worker who finds himself trying to save both his family and humanity from a zombie pandemic breaking out across the globe.

So far, the movie - which was produced with a budget of over $170 millon - has received rave reviews, and he can add this one to the list:

Let me state from the outset I am not particularly a zombie movie freak nor a fan of apocalyptic adventures, yet this has both in abundance... and I couldn't get enough.

The movie had me involved and engaged the whole time, on the edge of my seat, gasping at all the right bits, and terrifying me when it was meant to. Also, laughing at some humourous spots - a can of soft drink at the vending machine... you'll know what I mean when you see it.

The 3D added that extra dimension (well, of course it did!) and was strangely unobtrusive to the film, in contrast to some 3D flicks which tip the sensory overload scale. One thing is certain: the vast quantity of nasty-looking zombies (leaving the number of scary undead dudes in MJ's 'Thriller' for, er, dead) has me not wanting to see a zombie ever again.

Brad Pitt demonstrates his acting chops - it's is his best yet: engaging, intense, and it's a true joy to watch this modern-day master on screen.

I thoroughly recommend the movie. It's clearly not date night material... unless of course you both want to crap yourselves in the dark for 116 minutes and, you know, go and get a bite to eat after and deconstruct and discuss your hopes for a zombie-free planet. Then... it's kinda perfect.

'The Great Gatsby': Movie Review

Watching 'The Great Gatsby' is a visual treat.

Apart from the obvious assault on the senses - it's in 3D, and watching the kaleidoscope of madness in high def is simply glorious - it's quite simply a devastatingly beautiful film to inhale.

And take it all in I did. Every detail was noted and every prop noticed (although I'd likely have to watch it again... and again, to fully appreciate every last pearl, every single floral arrangement), and while this film is distinctly Baz Luhrmann, it has his wife Catherine Martin and her talent all over it.

Catherine is the creative brains behind 'Gatsby' and it shows.

From the Prada collaboration which resulted in impeccably-beaded frocks, to the Tiffany & Co swoon-worthy pieces, to the Waterford crystal glasses, each and every scene is a dream for the detail-obsessed.

Hardcore film critics will dissect every scene, question the authenticity of the dialogue (which, of course, comes courtesy of the F. Scott Fitzgerald book of the same name).

It doesn't matter if you haven't read the book (I did, as many did, in high school).

You can enjoy the epic adventure without knowing the storyline... you're brought up to speed pretty darn rapidly.

Indeed, the first part of the movie gets the intros out the way quick-smart, and immerses us into Jay Gatsby's world.

And what a world it is: opulent, brash, loud, colourful, mad and... an abbreviation that could have been coined for this very film: OTT!

Those who know the book, know it's a story about morality and class distinctions and being authentic. At the beginning of the film, Baz is determined to set a frenetic pace. And he does. And it just works.

The party sequences at the Gatsby residence are something to behold: think an explosion of colourful characters and a gazillion shades of spectacular.

And then there's the slew of acting talent to behold.

For me, standouts are Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan, and Australian relative newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker, who is breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly talented. Each time both are on screen I just can't take my eyes off them.

And Leo, as Jay Gatsby: measured and in a role that is wonderfully executed, his standout scenes towards the end of the movie are something to appreciate. Carey Mulligan is all alabaster-skinned perfection, and is mesmerising to watch, especially in the scenes that require her to dig deep emotionally.

Standouts too are Isla Fisher, and a brief role for Vince Colosimo. And, Australian performer Brendan Mclean as Klipspringer. Tobey Maguire stars as Nick Carraway, and while initially he seems an odd casting, he delivers the goods as his role gets meatier and more demanding as the story progresses.

All in all, the heart and soul poured into this several-years-long project is all there on display to be appreciated by moviegoers. Every frame is an absolute masterpiece.

And then there's the soundtrack: think Jay Z, Beyonce, Lana Del Rey, Will.i.am, Gotye, Fergie, Sia, and more. The budget was obviously big also for the music.

Perhaps the biggest gripe aficionados of the book will have is how the book should be best interpreted on screen.

And there will be those who will question if the film has heart and depth, but then again... neither did the characters portrayed in the movie. They're intentionally and deliciously shallow and superficial.

A film like this has to be polarisingl I liken it to the same kind of 'confusion' Baz's earlier flick 'Romeo & Juliet caused: was it true to Shakespeare? How can a thoroughly modern take on prose so old actually work on screen?

But work it did, and has stood the test of time. You could watch 'Romeo & Juliet' today and it'd still be as edgy and elegant as it was when it was first released.

The same can be said for the modern masterpiece that is 'Gatsby': I truly believe Baz's vision will be appreciated more as time goes on, and with each watch of this epic cinematic triumph.

'The Hangover III' - Red Carpet and Review

'The Hangover III' premiere happened in LA overnight and the stars were all out in force.

First, let's talk about Bradley Cooper. He attended. Okay, that's all I had to say about that. His mere presence is swoon-worthy.

Moving on from Bradley and my fixation with him (and his hair! Although his hair should not have been trimmed for the red carpet, just sayin'), 'Mr Chow' and his real-life wife, and 'Alan' and 'Stu and his screen wife, Heather Graham and the rest of the cast attended. Scroll down for the photos:

And so, the movie. What's it like? First, here's the trailer.

There are certain scenes that are classic 'Hangover'. Caesar's Palace. Mr Chow. Girls. I'll leave the rest up to your imagination, but suffice to say, the ensuing and preceding scenes are as mad as you expect. And quite cover-your-eyes compelling (I am someone who gets easily spooked when someone is about to, you know, get killed).

Doug... poor ol' Doug gets the raw end of the stick, just as he did in the original 'Hangover'.

And then there's Melissa McCarthy. She plays the accidental love interest for Alan... and it's a match made is quirk-ville heaven. It's loads of fun watching these two in their scenes.

Some early jokes between the boys are rather flat, and you hope it picks up. And it does. (In fact, I found there were several, laugh out loud-ridic one liners that were very amusing). The storyline is clever and involved, and while a tad far-fetched - is as true 'Hangover' style - there are surprises and literal cliffhangers to keep you involved right until the end.

And it is THE END, as all the movie posters attest, and all the actors have said in their promo interviews. It's director Todd Phillips's final swan song for his 'rat pack', and it has been a fun ride, one that I will watch each time it's repeated on pay- or commercial TV.
