PONS Avarcas: The Shoes Of The Season - Spring/Summer 2013 Collection

Shoes, shoes, shoes. SO many choices, especially for spring/summer when feet come out to play and pretty-painted toes complement strappy footwear.

Meet the PONS Avarcas shoe: a line of shoes for men, women and children that are 100% handcrafted on the Mediterranean island of Menorca from high quality leather.

It's as classy as you expect when you meet the gorgeous PONS face to face - if you are a little shoe-obsessed like I am, you like to get up close: slowly taking in that new-shoe scent, inspecting its quality, looking close-up to admire how perfectly it's made...

The shoes will exceed the expectation you have when it's delivered, after you've gone over the myriad Pons choices online. Here is a Pons Avarcas shoe close-up. Zoom in to your hearts' delight:

When delivered, expect the PONS Avarcas classiness to continue: your choice of shoe comes beautifully wrapped in brown paper and string... so stylishly old school!

Says Noelia Pahissa, co-founder of PONS Avarcas: “When I first arrived in the US, I was surprised by how many requests I received for where I got my Avarcas,” It only took a few dozen compliments for me to realize there was an unmet demand for this Spanish product in the U.S. market. Through a partnership with the original Menorcan family of artisans, my husband Jose and I are thrilled to bring handmade artisan sandals to Americans through our new PONS Avarcas label.”

The PONS Avarcas is actually a favourite of Spanish royalty (it's such a classy, well-made shoe... you can see why), and it's perfect as your everyday sandal. If 'everyday' to you means sparkle as it does for me, you'll love the shoe I was gifted. Behold, gold glitter!

Each PONS Avarcas shoe is 100% handcrafted on the Mediterranean island of Menorca from high quality leather and rubber soles that features a wide range of colors in flat and platform styles for men, women and children.

Can you believe, due to the huge popularity of Avarcas, some manufacturers have begun to produce fake imitations that are far from the authentic, artisan and top quality measures and materials used in the genuine avarcas. Imitation may be "the sincerest form of flattery" but this is plain annoying... and no doubt hugely uncomfy on your feet!

In an effort to protect the traditional Avarcas handcrafted in the island, the local Menorcan government (Consell Insular) and the Shoemaker Association of Menorca (Associacío de fabricants del Calçat de Menorca) have developed the official "Product of Menorca" seal that ensures the high quality standards found in the authentic Avarcas sandals. I think that's pretty darn cool, and ensures you're getting the real deal, always.

Here is has just released their Spring/Summer 2013 collection. This is the second season for PONS Avarcas in the US market:

The Spring/Summer 2013 line is divided into men’s, women’s and children’s lines.

The women’s collection features a range of flat and platform styles with myriad straps. From classic neutrals to animal prints, there truly is something for everyone. This season features a range of on-trend spring and summer shades, such as aqua blue, coral, forest green, French blue, fuchsia, peach, purple, red, saffron, sand, taupe and crisp white. The collection also features a fun array of glitter styles in gold, silver and black. Click here for the women's range.

The men’s collection features the classic low-profile style. Neutral masculine colors include sand, brown, French blue, taupe, lava and forest green. Click here for the men's range. This is the pair the man in my life is taking for a spin:

The kid’s collection for both boys and girls offers the same fashionable features as the men’s and women’s line but for babies, kids and youth. Flexible, durable and comfortable, these sandals are a stylish option for a child’s active lifestyle. In addition to classic neutrals, this season features a range of on-trend spring and summer shades, such as aqua blue, coral, forest green, French blue, fuchsia, peach, purple, red, saffron, sand, taupe and crisp white. In addition to neutrals, the collection also features glitter styles in gold, silver and girlish prints such as flowers, ocean and butterflies. Click here for the kid's range. Here is the pair my daughter will be wearing:

Fit n Fast and Triumph: Bra Fittings + Triaction Launch

I am now a... well, not gym junkie, not fitness freak... but I do love keeping fit and healthy, thanks to my Fit n Fast-assisted transformation.

But I get a bit funny if the girls are not securely tucked away. On a few occasions during a personal training sesh with my fab Fit n Fast trainer Hayley I'd worn the wrong bra (read: almost every time as I haaate feeling restricted in uncomfy bras) and I'd halt training for a few seconds so I could tuck those puppies back in.

Well. This new little Triumph baby called the 'triaction' bra might just be the answer.

Now, those clever gym people have teamed up with bra company Triumph 'Bounce Free Sports Bra Fittings' held at Fit n Fast Westfield Sydney from 29 October. This three day initiative will be happening in selected Fit n Fast gyms around the country.

Says the Fit n Fast/Triumph blurb: "Sports bras will be tested for comfort, fit and support whilst exercising to ensure perfection is achieved, instigated following the revelation that of 1000 women who had been tested, only 39% would wear a professional sports bra when exercising despite 82% stating they wear a bra in order to protect their bust. 90% of women have something to complain about when it comes to wearing a bra, with over 50% not having had a bra fitting for five years or more.

The Bounce Free Sports Bra fitting allows you to trial bras from the Triumph triaction range (see all the new fab bras below... I am about to trial one!), whilst receiving expert advice from a Triumph Brastylist. The experts will take into consideration your preferred exercise type, breast size and body shape, while undergoing real-time exercise challenges."

Each Bounce Free Sports Bra fitting will take 15 minutes and will happen between 11am - 12pm.

For more on the bra fittings, go here.

Here, is Carolyn Stewart, National Sales Manager for Triumph Australia, who is also a trained BraStylist on the five top mistakes women make with sports bras:

1. Not wearing a sports bra at all for sporting activities. A regular bra, even if it a supportive bra will not be sufficient for sport. Even an A or B cup woman needs the support of a properly fitted sports bra. The design and construction of a sports bra is very different to that of a regular bra and is made to hold the bust firmly in place, reducing breast bounce while exercising.

2. Sports bras have a limited life and should be replaced frequently. Depending on how often a sports bra is worn and how well you take care of it, a sports bra should be replaced every six months. Elastic fibres break down over time, reducing the level of support the bra offers.

3. Women misinterpret the firm feel of a sports bra for being too small and end up buying the wrong size.  Where possible, always have a fitting and expect that the bra is meant to feel firm.

4. Not matching the impact level of your sporting activity to the support level of the sports bra.  Most good quality sports bras will be designed with a support level in mind. Women who play netball or run for instance will need more support than a wire free bra designed for yoga and Pilates.

5. Not investing money in a good sports bra. Always spend as much as your budget can afford as it is like good running shoes.  You definitely get what you pay for.
Go forth and be fitted!

Jennifer Hawkins: Cozi & Mount Franklin Lightly Sparkling

Tonight, Jennifer Hawkins launches her newest Cozi swimwear collection in Sydney's Watson's Bay - and YOU get the sneak peak before anyone else of her gorgeous new simming costume designs. These designs will - as they did for her last collection - also cleverly feature on ‘Mount Franklin’ Lightly Sparkling bottles throughout summer.

Here are all the stunning collection designs and photos:

Following the runaway success of 2012, the effervescent Jennifer Hawkins will once again add a touch of fashion to ‘Mount Franklin’ Lightly Sparkling with the debut of a new limited edition collaboration with her swimwear label, ‘Cozi by Jennifer Hawkins’.

Continuing her relationship with the Australian premium water brand, Hawkins has selected six fun and vibrant prints from her latest Cozi swimwear collection to feature on ‘Mount Franklin’ Lightly Sparkling bottles throughout summer.

Think flirty florals with Hawaiian and fresh summer inspired patterns selected for the collaboration. Colourful stripes and geometric patterns also make an appearance alongside the always-stylish animal print designs, including python and leopard for a bold and sexy touch.

Talking about the collaboration, Jennifer Hawkins said: “There are so many natural synergies between Cozi and ‘Mount Franklin’ Lightly Sparkling. They’re both about being fun, fresh and adding that bit of sparkle so I’m excited to work with them again on this season’s release.”
“The response to the first Cozi and ‘Mount Franklin’ Lightly Sparkling collection was overwhelming, I got such a buzz from seeing my Cozi designs on-shelf. The reaction on social media was phenomenal as well, thousands of Aussies were snapping photos, and sharing them on Instagram and Facebook. I can’t wait to see what they come up with using the new collection.”

“I’ve always loved the beach growing up and I practically lived in swimmers over the summer as a kid, and now to have Cozi grow from a passion project to something larger is very exciting. I get a thrill every time I get to release a new Cozi collection, and now in its sixth season, it feels like it'll be bigger and even better thanks to ‘Mount Franklin’ Lightly Sparkling.”

‘Mount Franklin’ Lightly Sparkling collectable bottles will be available in 450ml bottles in six fun and vibrant prints from Jennifer’s popular swimwear range from November 2013 until January 2014, and the 250mL and 750mL glass bottles will feature two prints.

Jen will launch the full Cozi collection, available at MYER, at an exclusive party at Sydney’s Watson’s Bay Hotel on Tuesday 22 October - tonight.

If you'd like to share your images on Instagram tagging @mountfranklin and #COZI you may just get regrammed by ‘Mount Franklin’ or Jen...

American Apparel Vagina Period T-shirt

When I saw this a few days ago, sheepishly scanning the news first thing in the AM, I was a little taken aback.

The word 'vagina' doesn't bother me. Neither does the 'c' word. It has a time and place.

Plus, I have been keen to review a new book called 'The Vagina'. So yeah, no biggie.

But this. Hmmm. It's a bit much. A vagina, spread-eagled, and mid-period. Uh, where on earth would you wear it?

Here are the unisex tees in question, which also includes a breasts version:

They are made and sold by American Apparel.

The back story?

The T-shirt is produced by 'The Ardorous', an all-woman art brand run by artist Petra Collins, who is a photographer and American Apparel employee.

Petra has an interest in "exploring female sexuality and teen girl culture", the brand said.

In an interview with VICE magazine, Petra said she had "trolled the mainstream media" with the shirt and made fun of how some outlets could not say the word "vagina".

Half the money from the t-shirt's sale is distributed to the artist and American Apparel takes the other 50 per cent.

Thoughts?

Lanolips: Kirsten Carriol Interview

Have you tried Lanolips yet? You may be one of few who are yet to trial this beauty phenomenon.

Here's the Lanolips range below, and the Lanolips story. It's a very impressive, uniquely Australian one.
Lanolips was created by Kirsten CarriolThe inspiration for Lanolips came from a humble sheep farm in Lucindale, South Australia where Kirsten spent her childhood.

Lanolin (the main ingredient in the Lanolips range) is a natural substance taken from freshly shorn sheep’s wool, and it was in the farm shed where Kirsten spent her summer holidays. Couple that with her DNA professor father’s passion for using natural ingredients that really worked and you have the foundation for Kirsten’s love of lanolin ("nature’s wonder moisturiser"), and ultimately Lanolips.
Kirsten set out to create a completely natural, ultra-pure lanolin lip ointment, one that gave the best moisturisation available and that had a lush, glossy finish while remaining natural – something that didn’t exist in the cosmetics world. For six years Kirsten pestered and prodded until she created her perfect “I want to wear that formula”, a formula that was: nourishing, moisturising, comfortable wear, made her lips feel great and was based on completely natural, ultra-pure medical grade lanolin.
Kirsten is a beauty industry powerhouse, and I have known her since my days as beauty editor at Cream magazine, when she was director at her PR company Buzz Consulting. While still heading up Buzz, repping myriad high-end beauty brands, she launched Lanolips.
Here, founder/director Kirsten is interviewed by Josie's Juice on the whole phenomenon:

Josie's Juice: Tell me about how your love for lanolin came about?
Kirsten: My love for lanolin is life long, as a child I spent my school holidays at my grandparent’s sheep farm in Lucindale, South Australia. My father, who is a Professor of Genetics, swore by lanolin (which is a by-product of wool) for treating dry skin - It was literally the only ingredient he would use on my siblings and I, he truly believed it was nature’s best moisturizer and he passed that belief on to me.

How much did you commit in order to get Lanolips up and running?
Kirsten: Lanolips was six years in the making, it took years of hard-work, research, and product testing to create the perfect formula; I was turned away by many factories who could not work with a high percentage of lanolin, it took a lot of perseverance an belief in my product, but I eventually found the right factory to make my product.

There are so many different elements involved with creating a product and a brand, obviously the quality of the lanolin was the major focus for me, but I also needed to create branding assets like logos and packaging which sounds fun, but is also a slow process from beginning to end – you want it to be perfect!

What has been your proudest achievement so far for the brand?

Kirsten: I always feel really proud when I receive a letter from a happy customer; it’s a really warm and satisfying feeling to know that Lanolips has helped someone. I have received letters from customers with inexplicably dry skin as a result of undergoing radiation therapy or illness, and it is quite touching to think that it helped them so much they were compelled to write a letter.

Tell me more about how the perception of lanolin may be a little misunderstood?

Kirsten: Lanolin has been used as a skincare product in one form or another since the time of the ancient Greeks; but in more recent history it became popular for skin care companies to advertise their products as ‘lanolin free’. As a result for a long time there was a stigma attached to lanolin, consumers were educated by way of packaging that it was a ‘nasty’ ingredient that caused skin irritation. Funnily enough, there is no substantial scientific evidence to support the theory that lanolin is an allergen, if anything there is more scientific evidence to suggest it isn't.
Lanolin is a 100% natural product of the wool industry. In nature it acts as a barrier, protecting sheep from wet and cold weather, and is extracted from the shorn fleece of a sheep after their annual shear.  Its role in skin care is very similar to the role it plays in nature, a moisturiser and protectant. Lanolin is an extraordinary natural emollient-style moisturiser and is able to imitate and augment many of the functions of human skin lipids. The moisturisation properties of lanolin itself are amazing, it can hold over 200% of its own weight of water, acting as a moisture reservoir to help maintain the hydration of the skin.

The ultra medical grade lanolin we use in Lanolips goes through a stringent refining and cleaning process; cleansing the raw lanolin of all external impurities, scent and colour, making it the purest, most natural form of lanolin available – lanolin is one of the few products that is not better organic – and the ultra pure medical grade lanolin we use is the absolute best quality lanolin you can buy in the world.

What’s new with Lanolips...
Kirsten: This August I unveiled beautiful new illustrated boxes to house my products; I wanted something that would protect them in-store from fluorescent lights and to prevent sticky-fingers touching the products in store.

To do this I collaborated with an amazing Melbourne-based Illustrator, Sarah Hankinson, who I had discovered last year when we held an 'Artist Search' – she didn’t win that competition but I knew from her delicate and gentle entry illustration of the 101 Ointment that we would work together. I used her to create a bespoke Lanolips Christmas card last year and loved her work, so when I decided to tweak the Lanolips packaging I knew I had to work with her.

Here are Kirsten's Lanolips ads as they have appeared on 'Mornings'. I think they are the best advertorials around. Full of all the info you'd like to know about the products, and a great rundown on the history behind the brand:

french navy McGrath Foundation stationery

When was the last time you wrote a note - AND did good at the same time?

french navy - the brand becoming renowned with the pleasure that comes from gracious living - is giving back and practicing good etiquette, by supporting the McGrath Foundation in its new charitable venture: designing stationery sets with pink accents in a nod to breast cancer awareness month. Pink is of course the colour denoting support for breast cancer, and french navy has created four of their boxed stationery as pink sets, to honour the McGrath Foundation.

With a business ethos to give back and a personal family experience with cancer, Alexandra Blakemore has now joined forces with the McGrath Foundation to help support families experiencing breast cancer.

“A large part of me setting up my own business was the hope that when it was at a certain stage, I would be able to donate a percentage of sales to charity and look to help others through my business," says Alexandra.

Placing great value on helping charities, Alexandra approached The McGrath Foundation
and immediately knew it was a right fit to work together.

“You are able to see the direct results of your donation, that is, the money raised goes to getting
more nurses on the ground to help families at the time when they really need it”.

To help you pick the right, charitable sets, a pink sash has been placed across these boxes, and french navy is donating 10% of the price of sales from four of their pink sets of boxed stationery to the McGrath Foundation.

Jane and Glenn McGrath’s much-publicised experience with breast cancer led to the foundation of what has become one of Australia’s most respected and recognised charities, the McGrath Foundation. Because of their experience, they came to believe that every Australian family experiencing breast cancer should have access to the support of a breast care nurse.

And so, the mission of the McGrath Foundation is to ensure every Australian family experiencing breast cancer has access to a breast care nurse, no matter where they live or what their their financial situation is.

The McGrath Foundation estimates 150 McGrath Breast Care Nurses are needed to achieve this. Only then, will every family in this situation have access to optimal care.

Fundraising for theses french navy started on July 1, 2013 and continues throughout the breast cancer awareness month of October.

RRP $40, with 10% going to The McGrath Foundation.
